Deputies from the Santa Clarita Valley Sheriff’s Station arrested two drivers in separate incidents over the Christmas weekend for allegedly driving drunk, station officials noted in a social media post.
Here’s the story:
We made a few DUI arrests over the holiday weekend. Deputies conducted traffic stops on vehicles, drivers were assessed for possible impairment, and for the most part they checked out fine. That part is good. But the bad news is just one DUI is too many. It takes only one DUI to destroy families’ lives forever. The concerning part of the DUI arrests we did make is that the drivers thought they were fine to drive.
First of all, we want to commend the citizens who called our station around 1 a.m. Sunday to report a possible drunk driver. A silver Nissan Altima was spotted running a red light on Newhall Ranch Road. Deputies caught up to a car matching the description in the Sierra Highway/Golden Valley Road area and conducted a traffic stop.
The driver, a 27-year-old Santa Clarita woman, admitted to “having a beer” and told the deputy she was on her way to see her daughter. A DUI investigation revealed the woman’s blood alcohol level to be nearly double the legal limit.
In another weekend DUI arrest, deputies arrested a man from Diamond Bar. He was traveling with his family. His wife was in the front passenger seat, and his small child was in the back seat. His wife checked out fine, with no detection of alcohol consumption.
But the male adult driver, who was also a husband and father, had a blood-alcohol level above the legal limit and had been on the road driving for at least an hour before he was pulled over.
In the above two scenarios, those arrestees are very, very fortunate they didn’t kill themselves, their family members, or some other innocent motorist by driving when intoxicated.
And, sad to say, in both cases, the drivers thought they were fine to drive.
It’s speculated in one of the cases, others may have tried to take the driver’s keys away, but the driver resisted and got behind the wheel of the car anyway.
Another holiday weekend is fast approaching. Please plan ahead. Don’t drink and drive, no matter what.
