[KHTS] – A Santa Clarita stuntman announced his plans Monday to break the world record for surviving being on fire for the longest period of time.
Jayson Dumenigo, who has been a professional stuntman for 17 years, previously held the record for surviving a full-body burn without oxygen for the longest duration of time: 5 minutes, 25 seconds. However, his record was broken by an Austrian stuntman in November of last year, and now Dumenigo is planning on taking it back.
As co-founder of Action Factory in Saugus, which provides fire equipment for the stunt and film industry, Dumenigo originally decided to break the world record for the benefit of his business.
“We claim that we provide the best gear and have the best services,” he said. “Often in our industry people say that and there’s no proof, so we decided to prove it to a world audience. It was always our goal to create a challenge for our competitors.”
In front of an audience of about 40 people, Dumenigo succeeded in breaking the world record in March 2011 in Canyon Country, with hopes of creating an ongoing contest between Action Factory and competing businesses.
After a long period of time passed with no competition, Dumenigo became concerned that his concept was disappearing and made the decision to collaborate with Josef Todtling, the Austrian stuntman who holds the current record.
“A gentleman in Austria contacted me and we opened up some dialogue,” he said. “He actually made several attempts, and it was his last one that he was able to beat the record by about 15 seconds… Some of the information he got from me I believe helped him break the record ever so slightly, so now we’re back at it and want to make it so (our record) never goes away.”
Dumenigo is planning his next attempt for October of this year and is confident he will be successful. He noted suit design as one change that should improve his time.
“We’re known for having a certain style and presenting our equipment in a very favorable fashion, so we want to make sure it’s not a big, bulky look,” he said. “We want to have a sleek design… kind of like the Iron Man suit, but without all the metal.”
The goal for this attempt is not only to take back the record, but also to take the next step toward Dumenigo’s ultimate goal: walking one mile completely engulfed in fire.
“It’s never been done before and it’s never been attempted before,” he said. “The technology was not available up until now. We’d like to break two records, not just the longest duration but the longest distance as well. Breaking those two legitimate Guinness records is a gateway into walking a mile. Whether or not I can actually do it, I don’t know if it’s possible. But I believe it is.”
When asked why Dumenigo has set his sights on such unusual activities, he compared his efforts to climbing Mount Everest.
“Why would I climb the mountain? Because it’s there,” he said. “There’s the triumph of being able to conquer it, and in our world, walking a mile in fire is really unique. And it doesn’t hurt getting a little spotlight on the company either.”
Jayson Dumenigo is a trained professional. Please do not attempt these stunts at home.

May I suggest Buck McKeon as a better candidate for this? Or maybe Donald Sterling? Bob Kellar?
