1850 - Death Valley '49er William Robinson dies in Soledad Canyon from drinking too much cool water [story]
Leaving Death Valley

biz_hfhscv[HFH] – We have a highly needy veteran family that will be moving into our Chase Bank donated house this Friday.

Due to unfortunate circumstances, the Family is currently staying in a homeless shelter in Downtown L.A. and does not have normal kitchen, bathroom, and bedroom accommodations that our other Habitat families have had, nor time to save for these items while going through our program.

Recent layoffs coupled with combat injuries resulted in loss of a home and the inability to establish first and last month’s rent. They do have a car and the children still attend school in SCV.

The Family would greatly appreciate donations of:

* Gift Cards – Target, Walmart, Ralphs, Food 4 Less, Home Depot, etc.

* Bathroom supplies – Towels, bath mats, soaps, cleaning supplies

* Kitchen supplies – Dishes, silverware, baking or cooking supplies, cleaning supplies

* Home Repair supplies

Please send or drop off all donations to:

Habitat for Humanity SF/SCV

Veteran Family of Five

21031 Ventura Blvd. Ste 610

Woodland Hills, CA 91364

We will be furnishing the home with furniture from our Habitat for Humanity ReStore, but we do not have any beds, if anyone would be willing to purchase beds for the parents and three children, that is also a great need.

They are a family of five, the father is an Air Force Veteran and suffers from PTSD, Graves disease, and combat injuries, his wife suffers from Lupus and suffers cardiac issues as a result, his eldest son, age 24, has autism and does not attend school or work. The younger children, ages 16 and 18, attend High School in the Hart School District, the older of the two has already been accepted to college on scholarship.

This family, with the father and oldest son’s disability payments, make enough money to qualify for our Habitat for Humanity housing program. They are currently living in a Homeless shelter in Downtown Los Angeles, they are being asked to leave the shelter by this Friday, May 3rd. We are lucky enough to have a home donated by the Chase Bank that we were able to update and remodel for a cost much lower than our new Habitat for Humanity homes. The family will pay a mortgage on the home and will go through our enrichment services program with the additional 99 families that are receiving homes in Sylmar and Santa Clarita through the Habitat for Humanity SF/SCV’s veteran housing program.

If you have any further questions about donations please contact Sarah Steffen at the Habitat for Humanity Office (818) 884-8808 or email her at ssteffen@humanityca.org.

Thank you for taking the time to read this email and help this veteran family.

Best Regards,

Doreen Shine

Chair of the Family Selection Committee
