[KHTS] – Santa Clarita Valley Sheriff’s Station officials unveiled their new 34-foot, $318,000 crime-fighting, emergency management command center Friday in Santa Clarita.
The Mobile Command Center is a 2015 Utilimaster walk-in van on a Freightliner MT-55 chassis, with a variety of different seats and work stations for deputies and officials during an emergency situation.
The command post allows Sheriff’s Department officials a much greater versatility in incident response, said Sheriff’s Station Capt. Roosevelt Johnson, giving a nod to former Capt. Paul Becker for starting the process to secure the funding several years ago, and Lt. John Roberts, a former operations commander at the station for following up with the specifications.
The Mobile Command Center can be utilized in everything from a hostage situation to a brush fire to public events, Johnson said, noting residents will get an opportunity to see the vehicle in action at the Touch-a-Truck event June 20 from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. at Central Park.
Funding for the vehicle came from a variety of sources, Johnson said, crediting the Sheriff’s Foundation and local business leaders like CEO Ken Wiseman of AMS Fulfillment and Valencia Acura co-owner Don Fleming, among others, for their support.
Supervisor Michael Antonovich also credited the strength of government’s ability in Santa Clarita to compliment business with partnerships that made the Mobile Command Center a reality.
“The strength of the Santa Clarita Valley is that they believe in public-private partnerships,” Antonovich said. “That’s why you have so many people from (southern parts of Los Angeles County) moving up here.”
