In an effort to increase safety on Santa Clarita streets, the city, in conjunction with the Santa Clarita Valley Sheriff’s Station is launching a new traffic safety campaign for residents to change their driving behaviors, including driving slower and less distracted.

“Drive.Focus.Live.” will include a variety of outreach, enforcement and traffic engineering efforts to help educate the community about the dangers and sometimes life-ending consequences of distracted and reckless driving.

In 2015, Santa Clarita experienced a 14 percent increase in traffic collisions, when compared to 2014. The majority of accidents involved speeding, following too closely, failure to yield, distracted driving, unsafe lane changes, traffic signal/sign violations and driving under the influence.

“It is very disheartening to see an increase in collisions. One fatality on our streets is one too many,” said Mayor Bob Kellar. “Bad driving habits affect everyone and enhancing traffic safety in the community begins with each individual.”

The city of Santa Clarita and the Sheriff’s Department are increasing their efforts for traffic safety enforcement. Additionally, the City has constructed traffic-engineering projects to improve safety on our roadways and is committed to a significant reduction of incidents in Santa Clarita.

It is the city’s goal to generate awareness about unsafe driving habits so there is a significant decrease of incidents in 2016. Targeted enforcement on major thoroughfares, an education and outreach campaign and more discussion in the community is aimed at making that happen.
