In the latest mail-in and provisional ballot tallies reported by officials for the Nov. 6 general election late Tuesday afternoon, Democratic challenger Christy Smith’s overall lead has increased to 4,051 votes over Republican incumbent Dante Acosta in the race for California’s 38th Assembly District.
In the previous tally last Friday, Smith’s overall lead was 3,099 votes.
The district includes areas of Los Angeles and Ventura counties.
In LA County, Smith now has 66,473 votes (52.75 percent) to Acosta’s 59,547 (47.25 percent).
In Ventura County, Smith has 22,995 votes (47.06 percent) and Acosta has 25,870 (52.94 percent).
Smith’s total in both counties is 89,468 to Acosta’s 85,417, a lead of 4,051 votes.
On Election Night, Acosta’s overall lead was 1,222 votes.
Acosta conceded the race to Smith Wednesday, Nov. 14, as the count of provisional and mail-in ballots continued.
In LA County alone, 261,000 ballots remain to be counted as of Tuesday’s update. Of those, roughly 4 percent should be from the 38th Assembly District.
Late absentee ballots are generally those mailed on election day or dropped off at polling places. Provisional ballots are cast at polling places on election day. The election-day ballots have been trending Democrat, compared to traditional “early” absentees, aka vote-by-mail ballots that were returned well ahead of election day, which trend Republican locally and are included in the initial vote tally.
The next updates from both county registrars are due Friday, Nov. 23, and Tuesdays and Fridays after that until all ballots are counted. The election results are not final until the count is complete and certified.
