[KHTS] – A 16-year-old from Ojai died Sunday from injuries sustained in an off-roading mishap at Rowher Flats, according to the California Highway Patrol.

The incident occurred around 11 a.m. in the Rowher Flats Off-Highway Vehicle riding area on Lookout Trail, according to a news release.

The youth was riding a 2013 Yamaha YZ450F and traveling down a steep incline at an unknown rate of speed, said CHP Officer John Lutz.

The rider made an unsafe turning movement, traveled off the designated trail, and was unable to maintain control of the vehicle due to rough terrain, resulting with him being ejected from the vehicle.

The rider and his bike continued to travel down the incline and collided at the bottom of a ravine.

The Los Angeles County Fire Department was notified at 11:18 a.m. and a helicopter arrived at 11:37 a.m., said Fire Inspector Tony Akins. The youth was airlifted to Henry Mayo Newhall Memorial Hospital in Valencia.

The Los Angeles County Department of Coroner could not confirm the teen’s identity. The CHP news release identified him as Hunter J. Baugher.

  10. This is sad. But the story is written very poorly. They make it sound like he was out for a stroll down a paved road and lost control.
This riding area is covered with rocks and a rather rough area once you start to climb the hills. I have known a lot of people to get hurt in the area. This story makes it sound like cake walk to me.
Again, very sad for the family. Best wishes to all involved.

  11. sooo sad….these boys need to realize they’re not invincible! All it takes is one wrong move. I tell Travis this all the time. I’m not saying don’t play. Just be smart about it and use you’re head…love and prayers to this poor family!

This is one of my son’s friends and it is such a terrible tragedy. My son just spoke to him on Friday and to have to hold a teenager in my arms to comfort him for his loss was hard enough, my heart breaks for his family that doesn’t have that option now, I can’t even image their heartache. Our prayers are with you.

Cody and I will miss our movie nights with you Hunter, rest in peace.:(
