A 3-year-old boy was airlifted to Children’s Hospital Los Angeles on Thursday afternoon after he was found at the bottom of a community pool in Valencia.
Los Angeles County Fire officials report that the boy was discovered in the pool at El Molino and Alta Vista Streets, in a neighborhood behind Valencia High School.
Paramedics responded to the scene and were able to restore the boy’s breathing before he was taken to the hospital by a Fire Department helicopter.
“We have several more months of hot weather,” said fire department spokeswoman Stephanie English. “Children drown without a sound. We’ve seen several cases already, we’re transported four, five or six to Childrens’ already since the weather started warming up and we still have several more months to go.
“You think other adults are there and they’re watching, or other kids are in the pool, so there’s no way a child can be in the bottom of the pool, but it happens the same way, time after time,” she continued.
The call was received at 2:34 p.m. and the child was enroute to Childrens’ by 2:40 p.m.. The helicopter landed at Heritage Park in Valencia to pick the child up.
The child’s condition is unknown, but English warned that vigilance was the only answer to keeping children safe around water.
”Breathing doesn’t always mean a happy outcome,” she said. “There could have been damage, we just don’t know what the results are. It depends on how long he was under the water.”
