Drew Wolitarsky saved his biggest catch for his final one.
And it won’t even count on his offensive stats.
Wolitarsky intercepted a Connor Wingenroth pass in the end zone with less than five minutes to play to help preserve a 42-24 Canyon win over the Hart Indians Friday at Harry Welch Stadium.
The game was televised by SCVTV.
But it was the offensive show Wolitarsky put on before the interception that sealed the Cowboys junior wide receiver as the U.S. Army Player of the Game. Wolitarsky caught 10 passes for 184 yards and a touchdown.
The game was exactly what a fan would hope for between two teams tied at the top of the Foothill League. Hart (6-3, 2-2) had a 17-14 halftime lead they extended to 24-14 on the opening drive of the third quarter when Wingenroth scored from three yards out. It was his second rushing touchdown of the game.
But Canyon responded by scoring a touchdown on their ensuing possession, their opening drive of the second half. And it was Wolitarsky hauling in a Jonathan Jerozal pass from 56 yards out to bring the Cowboys to within three.
The Cowboys (8-1, 3-1) went on to score four unanswered touchdowns, capped off by Jerozal’s 32-yard strike to Zane Patterson in the closing moments of the game.
Jerozal, the Foothill League’s keading passer, finished 17-of-23 for 283 yards and three touchdowns. Canyon running back Max Archuleta ran for 136 yards on 23 carries.
Hart sophomore quarterback Connor Wingenroth was 16-of-28 for 239 yards, one touchdown and two interceptions. Dylan Edwards led the Indians running game with 59 yards.
Saugus defeated West Ranch 35-14 and Valencia beat Golden Valley 35-8. That sets up a showdown next Friday as the 3-1 in league Valencia Vikings will take on the 3-1 Saugus Centurions. The winner will likely share in the Foothill League championship, the loser may not even make the playoffs. The game will be televised by SCVTV.
Canyon will play Golden Valley while West Ranch hosts Hart in the final regular season games of the season.
