Racer magazine has selected Bryan Herta Autosport as its Team of the Year in its annual Editor’s Choice Awards.
Dan Wheldon won the Indianapolis 500 driving for Bryan Herta Autosport. It was only the second Izod IndyCar Series start for Bryan Herta Autosport, owned by Valencia’s Bryan Herta.
Wheldon took the lead on the final lap of the race when JR Hildebrand crashed in the turn 4 wall. It was the second career Indy 500 win for Wheldon.
He was the unlikely winner of the race that included teams owned by Roger Penske, Michael Andretti and Chip Ganassi. Even Herta was surprised Wheldon won the race.
“Can you believe that? I mean, we came here to win and we kept saying ‘We’re here to win’ but…we actually won!” Herta told ABC after the race.
Wheldon returned to Bryan Herta Autosport for the IndyCar Series season finale at Las Vegas Motor Speedway and died in a multi-car crash in the early laps of the race.
Bryan Herta Autosport was in the running with Red Bull Racing and its Formula One team for the Racer Magazine Team of the Year.
The Indianapolis 500 was also selected as the race of the year by Racer magazine.
