Valencia High’s Alison Lee made the cut for the US Women’s Open at Blackwolf Run in Wisconsin on Friday.

She shot a 2-over 74 and is 5-over for the tournament. The cut was 5-over.

Lee is making her third appearance in the US Women’s Open golf tournament. She missed the cut in 2010, the last time she played in the US Women’s Open. She did not qualify for the US Women’s Open in 2011. In her first trip to the US Women’s Open, before her freshman year of high school in 2009, she made the cut and finished in 26th place.

“I was just so excited because I missed last year,” said Lee, who will be a senior at Valencia High School in the fall. “Last time I made the cut was when I was 14 (in 2009 at Saucon Valley C.C. Shot 75-72-76-70.) It was a good experience and I learned a lot. Coming this year, it wasn’t as nerve-racking as it was the first year. My mindset was to try to keep calm and do my best because that’s what you have to do out here on this tough course. You have to be patient with every shot and not think too much and I was able to do that today.”

Lee had a double bogey on her 10th hole on Friday. She had one birdie and a bogey on her eighth hole, a 181-yard, par 3.

“They do move up the tee on a few holes,” Lee said. “Overall, I was under par in the beginning, but towards the end, I had a double on one hole (first hole made a 6). And the hole locations weren’t as bad. After yesterday, people knew what they had to do to play better today.”

Lee is in a group of 11 golfers at 5-over. She is one of three amateurs to make the cut. Lydia Ko is the top amateur at 2-over and Emma Talley is 4-over.

“I actually shot five over when I was 14 and the cut was six over that year,” Lee said. “I knew I had to play like yesterday or play a little better, and I was pretty much able to do that. It was really stressful at times. I tried not to think about the score. There was one point where I didn’t even know what I was shooting. I just tried to make pars … and don’t be too greedy.”

Suzann Pettersen leads the US Women’s Open at 5-under after two rounds. Michelle Wie and Cristie Kerr are a shot back in second place at 4-under.

“I heard Se Ri won here with six over,” Lee said. “I thought it was going to be really tough. I know Beth Daniel and Meg [Mallon] and they said it was really hard when they played here [in 1998]. Another told me, I remember seeing Pat [Hurst] make a bogey and moving up the leaderboard. When I shot 3 over yesterday, I thought it was really good, and a lot of people shot under par. Even today, a lot of low numbers. Here I like the wind. If there is no wind at all, it feels like you are in a sauna just melting.”
