The City of Santa Clarita Public Library will host three new events for young adults to discover the many resources each public library has to offer.

The following events and programming are open to patrons at the Santa Clarita Public Library branches including Canyon Country, Newhall and Valencia.

* Navigating Homework: Databases and More at Your 24/7 Library- Hosted on Thursday, August 23 from 7:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. at the Valencia Library, this program is designed to help young adults, ages 12-18, and their parents understand how to access free online reference materials using a Santa Clarita Public Library card, including test preparation and homework help.

* Poetry Workshop for the “On the Wings of Books” Poetry Contest- Hosted on Tuesday, August 28, from 7:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. at the Valencia Library, this workshop prepares young adults in 7th-12th grade who wish to participate in the poetry contest being held in honor of the Old Town Newhall Library grand opening. Participants will learn how to use specific techniques to construct poems as well as gain inspirational ideas for their own original poem.

* “Mocha and More” Teen Book Discussion at Barnes and Noble- Held on the third Friday of every other month from 7:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. starting Friday, September 21, 2012, the Santa Clarita Public Library in partnership with Valencia Barnes & Noble is hosting a special book discussion group for teens in 7th-12th grade. The first “Mocha and More” book discussion will feature the bestselling dystopian novel Divergent by Veronica Roth. Participants will be treated to a Starbucks drink from the Barnes & Noble café and the book will be available to check out from the local Santa Clarita Public Library or to purchase at Barnes & Noble.

“The Santa Clarita Public Library is committed to promoting literacy and education through innovative library programs and services,” said Mayor Frank Ferry. “Not only will these events help educate community members about the numerous resources offered at each library, they will also engage residents through reading, writing and more.”
