A Castaic man died early Sunday when he crashed his pickup truck into a tree near the side of Interstate 5 in Valencia.
The victim was identified as Anthony “Tony” Friel, who turned 45 on June 30.
According to his Facebook page, Friel graduated from Saugus High School in the mid-1980s and worked in rigging and lighting as a member of IATSE Local 33, the Los Angeles Stagehands union. IATSE members work in theater, television, live events and other media.
According to a report from the California Highway Patrol, Friel was driving north on Interstate 5 just south of Valencia Boulevard at 1:13 a.m. when he lost control of his 2008 Toyota pickup.
Friel “allowed his vehicle to leave the roadway where it collided with a sign,” the CHP report states. “After striking the sign, the vehicle went airborne and struck a large tree.”
Friel sustained a massive head wound and died at the scene.
According to the CHP report, Friel was the only occupant of the vehicle, and no other vehicle was involved. His rate of speed was unknown and the weather was described as clear.
