Adding to the expansive trail areas in the Santa Clarita Valley, the Santa Clarita City Council approved the acquisition Tuesday of property near Sand Canyon Road and Lost Canyon Road for the Sand Canyon Trail.
The addition of the property will add to the City’s ongoing efforts to increase the multi-use trail along Sand Canyon Road, according to the council agenda. The property is located at 28111 Sand Canyon Road.
The total cost of the project is expected to be $540,000, officials said. The property cost about $470,000. The total price also includes $20,000 for escrow, title, surveying fees and due diligence costs and $50,000 to remove structures on the property.
The property measures 41,780 square feet, according to the agenda. In 1957, a 2,000-square-foot single family home and two garage buildings were built. Century 21 All Moves officials listed the property and originally offered the sale of the site at $489,999.
Improved pedestrian safety and access to is expected Sulphur Springs Elementary School and Pinecrest School by adding the trail network through the Sand Canyon Road and Lost Canyon Road intersection, officials said. A monument sign or other gateway feature may be included in the project.
“Eventually this will make a beautiful entrance to our Sand Canyon Area,” said Ruthann Levison, communications chair of the Sand Canyon Homeowners Association, in an email. “This will provide a wonderful opportunity for a future trailhead with connections to existing trails and open space in our area.”
Vista Canyon Ranch developers are paying for the project through reimbursements to the city’s general fund. The additional land is expected to the Vista Canyon ranch trail to the Sand Canyon trail.

Good. The stretch of Sand Canyon that goes under the railroad bridge has needed a safe way for pedestrians to get through for years. At this point you either have to walk on the road and dodge cars or go up the bank and duck under the railroad bridge a little bit west of the road, using a dirt footpath that runs along the chain link fence around the property that is to be removed. It’s silly not to have safe walking access for two elementary schools on Lost Canyon and for the two churches that are just south of the bridge.
I have to ask, though — how will the proposed bullet train affect this trail?
