In one of the most thrilling Olympic finishes in recent memory, Shaunae Miller of the Bahamas out-dove Canyon Country’s Alyson Felix to the finish line to win the Women’s 400 meter sprint Monday night in Rio De Janeiro.

Miller lead for the majority of the race until down the back stretch Felix came on strong to bush the Bahamian to the limit. A last second stumble turned into a dive by Miller gave her the edge, just getting her shoulders across the line ahead of Felix to win by seven hundreds of a second.

Felix was looking for her first gold at the 2016 in the 400 meters, her only event at the 2016 Rio games, still returning from a torn right hamstring at the 2016 World Championships.

Felix has raced in ever summer Olympics since the Athens Games in 2004, earning four gold and two silver medals along the way.

She won gold in the 2012 London games in the 200 meters but failed to qualify for the Rio games in the same event. She also has two gold medals as apart of the Women’s 4×100 meter relay.

The silver medal is the seventh Olympic medal for Felix who has not made it known weather she will attempt to compete in the 2020 games in Tokyo.

  1. hmmm… that doesn’t seem fair :/

    • Yeah, the more I think about it and after seeing the video… I’m shocked that that’s allowed. And it didn’t look like a stumble at all (some say she stumbled and decided to dive)… it was a full on purposeful dive for the finish!! I’m upset :/

  2. That shouldn’t be allowed.

  3. She needs to be on her feet, not diving. It’s running, not swimming. NOT legal.

  4. it should be whos foot was across the line first, since it is a race, not a leaping or falling across the line race.

  5. It should not be legal. Its running, not flinging your body across the finish line.

  6. I thought this was a foot race! How did it evolve into a diving competition? This rule needs to be changed ASAP. Felix was robbed of the gold medal. Seriously, what the heck?!

  7. Lilia Ortiz says:

The gates have opened for ending races on a dive, are you f kidding me. Coaches are going to start training on “dive” finishes. That is for baseball… Diving to still a base. Where do write to clarify and stop this.

  8. Felix got robbed. Where are the officials on this one?

  9. Curtis Hook says:

I don’t think a leap of desperation should count as crossing the finish line first. Sorry this happened to you Alyson Felix; you’re the true gold medal winner in my eyes.

  10. I agree it’s unfortunate for Felix and I would’ve liked to see her take the gold, but diving across the line is 100% legal.

  11. That’s not crossing the finish line, that’s falling at the finish.

  12. Everyone was saying the same thing when the USA won the same way, right?

  13. D.j. Smetana says:

Bogus. U lean through the line Not dive

  14. Really stinks. They should change the rules to whoever has their foot over the line. She ran a great race though! Way to go Alyson! Way to represent!

  15. Cathy Lahey says:

Should be her feet not her hand…

  16. If you know anything about track rules, you know the finish is the first part of your body below the neck, and above the hips(chest) that crosses the line. It was the correct results. David Nevil( USA) earned a silver medal in the same way in China. It doesn’t matter if it was on purpose or she tripped her body was across the line before Allison’s.
Allison is a phenomenal athlete and on that day she earned a Silver medal and we should be very proud of that!!

  17. If we used the foot then the taller athlete would always win
n in close races or if you happened to be on the right foot you would win.

  18. Leaning over the line while running across the finish line is winning. If you don’t cross the line on your feet you did not RUN the whole race. Shame on you Shaunee Miller ?just gave cause for a rule change. Will the IOC stop this from happening again? I hope so?

  19. Time to change the rule.

  20. Lyn O'Kane says:

Not a good way to finish

  21. Ky Tran says:

It’s not how she start, it’s how her finish

  22. First torso to cross wins. Not hands or feet, torso. That’s why runners lean forward at the end. She leaned, won, then fell. But even if she had clearly dove, it still would have been fair, legal and sportsmanlike. UK racer won the men’s 4,000m gold after he fell down in the middle of the race. He got up, continued and won. You can cartwheel across the finish line if you’re good enough… as long as you stay in your lane and don’t hinder other runners.
