[KHTS] – Santa Clarita Valley Sheriff’s Station deputies are investigating an alleged hate crime, after a Hispanic man was attacked shortly after midnight Sunday.

“We’re investigating this as a hate crime and an assault with a deadly weapon,” said Santa Clarita Valley Sheriff’s Station Deputy Josh Dubin of the Crime Prevention Unit.

A Hispanic man walking westbound on Soledad Canyon Road, near Crossglade, in Canyon Country around 12:30 a.m. Sunday, according to a Sheriff’s Station report.

Two white men approached the victim, according to Sheriff’s Station reports, and the suspect yelled a racial epithet at the victim.

The suspect then reportedly punched the victim, a 42-year-old Hispanic man, several times, according to the report.

The suspect then choked the victim, who fell to the floor. The suspect then kicked the victim while he was on the ground, while yelling additional racial epithets, according to the victim.

After the suspects fled the scene, running westbound on Soledad Canyon Road, the victim was able to contact authorities using the phone at a nearby restaurant.

The victim, who showed signs of intoxication, sustained cuts and bruises in the attack and was transported to the hospital, according to the report. His injuries were not considered life-threatening.

The suspect was described as 6 feet tall and 220 pounds, according to the report. No arrests have been made at this time. The second man with the suspect reportedly did not take part in the attack.

Countywide, hate crimes are at a 24-year low, according to the Los Angeles County Human Relations Commission, which is releasing a hate crime report Wednesday at 10 a.m. in Los Angeles.

Sheriff’s Station officials also are investigating a report of a hate crime in Valencia, where a black man was attacked outside Alamo restaurant in August.

No arrests have been made.
