Guest Commentary by City Manager Ken Pulskamp

Ken Pulskamp

As we begin the last quarter of the year, we are planning a host of great community and family-oriented programs and events.

On Saturday, Sept. 22, from 8 a.m. to 11 a.m., the City will host its award-winning River Rally Cleanup & Environmental Expo.  The event is expected to draw large numbers of volunteers interested in helping remove trash and debris from the Santa Clara River.  The City will provide volunteers with snacks, water, and a small gift in appreciation for their service to the community.  This year, we will be cleaning in Canyon Country behind the Post Office shopping center off Soledad, east of Sierra Highway.  River Rally is always a popular event for local scout troops, clubs, and other community service organizations.  More information is available through the City of Santa Clarita’s Environmental Services Division at 661-286-4098 or online at www.greensantaclarita.com.

On Sept. 29 at 10:30 a.m., the City Council will host a special grand opening event for the new Old Town Newhall Library.  Located at 24500 Main Street in Old Town Newhall, the new, 30,000 square-foot library will officially open to the public that day.  Tours of the new library throughout the day, giveaways, games for children and a Literary-inspired Street Fair on Main Street from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. will highlight the event.  For more information, visit: www.santaclaritalibrary.com.

Finally, it is my pleasure to cordially invite you to attend our annual State of the City Luncheon event on Oct. 18, 2012 at 11:30 a.m. at the Hyatt Grand Ballroom.  This year’s theme is the City’s 25th anniversary.  Your $40 gets you a great lunch and a special, commemorative gift. For     more information and to RSVP please visit our website at www.santa-clarita.com or by phone at 661-255-4939.

I hope that you and your family take the opportunity to attend these unique community events.  Thank you for your interest in the City of Santa Clarita.  It’s because of the tremendous involvement and support of our community that Santa Clarita continues to be one of the best places to live, work and play.

April has always been one of my favorite months because year after year, it’s the sign that baseball is officially back. As a longtime Dodger fan, I have fond memories of piling into the family Volkswagen with my brothers and parents for a day spent at Dodger Stadium.
