[KHTS] – Every year, 10th grade students at Santa Clarita Valley International Charter School must complete a personal creative project that benefits themselves or others, and 15-year-old Moises Robles has decided to use his personal project as a chance to give back to the school’s fledgling music program.

Robles has played the violin for seven years and participates in SCVi’s student orchestra. The music program, which started last year, has about 20 students in all.

Robles is raising money for the music program, to purchase supplies like music stands and chairs and to repaint the music room.

He realized that learners and facilitators didn’t have many materials and that some of what they did have was in poor condition, he said, so he spoke with the music program facilitators to find out what their needs were.

His goal is raise enough money to buy at least 20 chairs and 20 music stands.

Robles was in the KHTS AM-1220 studio for an on-air interview with Station Manager Kyle Jellings and received the first donation for his project from KHTS.

He also received support from Dunn-Edwards Paints on The Old Road. They are donating the paint for the music room.

The next step is to send letters to local businesses, asking for their support, Robles said.

The project must be complete by March or April.

The public can also donate towards music supplies by checks made out to “SCVi,” with “Personal Project Moises Robles” in the memo line. Music stands are $60 each and chairs are $66 each.

“I see lots of talented students…at my school,” Robles said. “I know that helping this program will encourage them to play more.”

The 10th grade personal project is part of SCVi’s International Baccalaureate Diploma Programme, which trains students in critical thinking and an international perspective. SCVi has been an IB World School since October 2013.

Robles will also join KHTS for the 9th annual Sacramento Road Trip on March 17-18.

The trip was advertised to some of the students most active in SCVi’s student body, and Robles decided that he wanted to be more informed about what goes on in Santa Clarita, he said.

Three issues that he plans to focus on while in Sacramento are the local water supply, school funding cuts and how to address drug abuse.

Robles will be one among about 100 community leaders going to Sacramento this year.
