This week’s SCVTV/AMG & Associates Student-Athlete of the Week is Nick Nowakowski of West Ranch. Nick has a cumulative GPA of 4.05. For him it’s about bettering his chances to get with a good college football program.
“(Good academics) just goes along with football,” Nick said. “You get recruited better because you can get into the school easier; the coach doesn’t have to push as hard for you. And it just kind of helps you in life in general to get an education.”
Nick points to his father as his prime motivator to excel academically.
“He challenged me to do my homework when I got home,” he said. “Even though I feel like not working out, to make sure I work out and to get better every day, both in the classroom and on the field.”
But when he thinks about someone he wants to emulate, he immediately thinks of his twin older brothers, Adam and Andrew.
“They helped me to go through high school everyday and stay on top of my stuff,” he said. “I worked out with them when they were in high school and that motivated me to compete with them.”
At 6-foot-3, 290 pounds, it is no surprise Nick is being recruited to play Division 1 college football. Miami, San Diego State, UCLA, Oregon, University of San Diego and several Ivy League schools that have shown interest. But it’s the Hurricanes that has his eye.
“It has a lot of tradition,” Nick said. “It’s a really nice campus … Seems like a good place to go.”
And as for what he will study, Nick’s looking at either aerospace engineering or sports medicine.
“I like aerospace because that’s what my dad does,” he said. “So he could help me get a job after college.”
Congratulations to Nick Nowakowski of West Ranch High School, the SCVTV/AMG & Associates Student-Athlete of the Week.
