The National Weather Service has issued the following alert for Wednesday, July 11:

 

…EXCESSIVE HEAT WARNINGS IN EFFECT FOR PORTIONS OF SOUTHWESTERN CALIFORNIA…

THE COMBINATION OF HOT TEMPERATURES AND INCREASED HUMIDITY EXPECTED WEDNESDAY THROUGH AT LEAST THURSDAY WILL ALLOW FOR AN EXCESSIVE HEAT WARNING TO BE ISSUED FOR THE MOUNTAINS OF LOS ANGELES…VENTURA AND SANTA BARBARA COUNTIES AS WELL AS THE SAN FERNANDO VALLEY…SANTA CLARITA VALLEY AND THE INTERIOR VENTURA COUNTY VALLEYS INCLUDING OJAI. ALTHOUGH HIGH TEMPERATURES WILL CONTINUE TO BE VERY HOT ACROSS THE ANTELOPE VALLEY AND SAN LUIS OBISPO COUNTY MOUNTAINS AND INTERIOR VALLEYS…RELATIVE HUMIDITY LEVELS SHOULD ALLOW HEAT INDEX VALUES TO REMAIN JUST UNDER WARNING THRESHOLDS FOR THESE AREAS. THE SAN LUIS OBISPO COUNTY MOUNTAINS AND INTERIOR AREAS MIGHT MEET EXCESSIVE HEAT WARNING CRITERIA ON THURSDAY. TEMPERATURES WILL BEGIN TO LOWER SOME BY FRIDAY AND INTO THE WEEKEND AS HIGH PRESSURE BEGINS TO BREAKDOWN.

THE NATIONAL WEATHER SERVICE IN LOS ANGELES/OXNARD HAS ISSUED AN EXCESSIVE HEAT WARNING…WHICH IS IN EFFECT FROM 11 AM WEDNESDAY TO 7 PM PDT THURSDAY.

* HEAT INDEX VALUES…WILL BE BETWEEN 105 AND 108 DEGREES WEDNESDAY AND THURSDAY AFTERNOON WITH LOW TEMPERATURES BETWEEN 75 AND 80 DEGREES IN SOME HIGHER VALLEY LOCATIONS.

* TIMING…FROM 11 AM PDT WEDNESDAY AND CONTINUING THROUGH THURSDAY EVENING AT 7 PM PDT.

* IMPACTS…THE COMBINATION OF VERY HOT DAYS ALONG WITH VERY WARM NIGHTS CAN RESULT IN OPPRESSIVE CONDITIONS…IN WHICH THE BODY CANNOT RECOVER AS QUICKLY. CONDITIONS LIKE HEAT STROKE OR HEAT EXHAUSTION ARE POSSIBLE…ESPECIALLY IF ENGAGING IN STRENUOUS OUTDOOR ACTIVITIES. THIS WEATHER COULD BE DEADLY FOR UNPREPARED CAMPERS OR HIKERS.
