Valencia’s Alison Lee made the 36-hole championship match at the 2012 U.S. Girls’ Junior Championship held at Lake Merced Golf Club in Daly City, Calif., but lost 1-up to 16-year-old Australian Minjee Lee.
Alison, a 17-year-old senior at Valencia High School who is not related to Minjee, was down by one after the morning round of 18. But after the break the championship was Alison’s for the taking.
A bogey by Minjee on the 23rd hole squared the match, and then consecutive birdies by Alison on the 26th and 27th holes gave her a 2-up advantage. A bogey by Minjee on the 30th hole extended Alison’s lead to three with six holes to play.
But Alison found bunkers on the next three holes, giving back her lead. And then when she 3-putted from eight feet away on the 34th hole, Minjee took the lead for good.
“I guess I wanted it too much and I hit it way too hard,” Alison told USGA.org.. “And the putt coming back, I just, I had this little thought in my head, what if I miss it? I actually thought that before I putted, and I did miss it.”
Alison had one final birdie chance at the 36th hole, but played too much break on her 15-footer.
“I guess there are just days like where your putts don’t drop in,” Alison said. “There’s nothing you can do but try and wake up the next day and be better. But today, I guess I couldn’t do that.”
Alison, one of three amateurs to make the cut at the U.S. Women’s Open two weeks ago, was understandably devastated following the match, saying that her hands would not stop shaking toward the end.
