Bill Bolde, Principal, Saugus High School
I recognize the great passion with which Coach Derek Ballard has approached his role as the leader of the Saugus basketball program and I appreciate the way he has given so much of his time and energy to the young men placed in his care.
I have taken time over the past several weeks to evaluate the program and to consider whether changes needed to be made. After careful consideration, the decision was made that Saugus basketball needed a change in leadership. This decision was not made as a result of this year’s results, nor was it on wins and losses. As this is a personnel issue, I am unable to divulge the internal aspects of a decision like this.
Contrary to some thoughts I have heard, Coach Ballard is still a member of our Saugus High School teaching faculty, a man who is asked to be in front of students each day and instruct them for the purpose of future success. I know that despite the disappointment that comes with this decision, Coach Ballard will continue to embrace his role as teacher and make every effort to influence the academic achievement of his students.
In terms of where the Saugus Basketball program goes from here … Mr. Rich Bahr, assistant principal and Mr. Jeff Hallman, athletic director and myself will begin a search process with parent and player representation to find a coach that will take the torch and provide outstanding basketball skills, nurture a deep love for the game, and foster the qualities of leadership, character, honor, and teamwork.
