The Boys and Girls Club of the Santa Clarita Valley will receive a $21,846 grant from LA84, the nonprofit foundation that administers proceeds from the 1984 Los Angeles Olympic Games. LA84 made the decision Oct. 30 and announced it Monday.

The funding is earmarked for “equipment, referee fees and awards for the basketball, soccer and volleyball programs and gym floor resurfacing.”

The SCV Boys and Girls Club has received funds from the organization in the past, including $10,000 in 2010, as have other local organizations, such as the Santa Clarita Track Club and the Santa Clarita Speed Skating Club in 2013.

The LA84 Foundation, which continues to invest proceeds from the 1984 Olympic Games to support youth sports across the eight southernmost counties of California, today announced $477,814 in grants to support 15 community youth athletics programs. The Foundation has invested more than $220 million in support of its mission to serve youth through sport since its inception in 1985. A grand total of $4.7 million has been awarded this year alone.

This latest set of awards will support a wide variety of local youth sports programs, including basketball, soccer, swimming, volleyball, martial arts, track and field, cross country, canoeing/kayaking, softball, boxing and golf. The grants will reach approximately 11,220 young athletes, providing them with the opportunity to develop critical fitness and life skills through sports.

“These grants reflect LA84’s ongoing commitment to ensure that as many children as possible are made life ready through sports,” said Anita L. DeFrantz, President of the LA84 Foundation and Executive Member of the International Olympic Committee. “Thirty years after the extremely successful 1984 Olympic Games in Los Angeles, we’re proud that the greatest legacy of those Olympics lives on in the young people participating in LA84-supported programs. We look forward to continuing our partnerships with organizations that are truly enhancing lives of children through sports.”

The largest grant is awarded to the Mt. San Antonio (Mt. SAC) Community College District to continue the LA84 Foundation/Mt. SAC Relays Youth Days Track and Field Program. Over the past 27 years, this program has introduced upwards of 420,000 young athletes to track and field. The program includes instructional track and field clinics, “Munchkin Runs” for boys and girls ages 2-12, as well as the annual Youth Days Track and Field Meet in March.

Another significant grant is presented to THINK Together, a leading community-based nonprofit committed to improving academic outcomes for youth living in underserved communities. This grant will support 4,000 children in ongoing LA84-sponsored intramural middle school sports programs in several locations across Los Angeles County and Riverside County. Due to state budget cuts, many of these schools rely on THINK Together to provide after school programs for their students.

Several Boys and Girls Club centers across the Southern California region will benefit from this round of grants, including the volleyball, basketball and indoor soccer leagues of the South Coast Area and the Santa Clarita Valley, the youth aquatics programs in San Dieguito and the intramural youth athletics program in La Habra. In total, the grants will reach more than 2,500 youth participating in these organizations’ critical after school sports programs.

A first-time grantee, the Jurupa Valley Boxing Club will be awarded $5,050 to purchase boxing equipment, secure licenses for coaches and provide scholarships for eligible youth. The award-winning program provides male and female boxers of all skill levels the opportunity to improve their skills. Another first-time grantee is the Glendora Lassie League, a recreational fast pitch softball league for girls ages 7-17. The $10,000 award will provide new backstop pads and cage nets for this growing program.
