Paniagua
Elijah Paniagua scored with less than five minutes remaining in regulation and The Master’s University and Marymount of California eventually played to a double-overtime, 1-1 tie Wednesday afternoon.
The tie was the Mustangs’ first of the 2016 campaign, settling their record at 3-2-1 and snapping the 21st-ranked Mariners’ (3-0-1) season-opening, three-match winning streak.
Paniagua’s second career goal came in unassisted fashion with just 4:18 left in regulation. It evened a match that the Mariners had led since the fifth minute (4:27) of play when Marymount’s Oriol Lopez put one by Mustang goalie Kyle Cunningham for a 1-0 lead.
Cunningham, who was playing in goal for the first time since September 23, 2015 after going down with a season-ending injury in practice a few days later, let nothing get past him the rest of the way. Tested like he had never been in his three previous seasons, the senior keeper was up to the task, recording a career-high 12 saves, including seven in a wild second half when the Mariners outshot the Mustangs 12-4.
He kept the match even, too, during the two, 10-minute overtime stanzas, notching a total of three saves.
Following the match, head coach Jim Rickard said of his team’s play, “We played with a lot of heart today. Marymount is a tremendous team with some high-level international players. It was Kyle’s first game back from injury and he was fantastic.”
The Mustangs will be hoping for more of the same play between the pipes and a little more offense when they return to Reese Field on Friday to host La Sierra at 4 p.m.
