California State University, Northridge women’s basketball coach Jason Flowers has announced the full 2017-18 Matadors schedule.
“We are excited about the challenges that this year’s schedule presents,” Flowers said. “Our conference will be as competitive as ever and our non-conference schedule will prepare us for that demand.”
CSUN tips off the season with an Oct. 28 game against The Master’s University. The Matadors’ participation in the 2017 Preseason WNIT was revealed earlier this Summer as CSUN will travel to the University of Oregon to officially begin the season Nov. 10. The Ducks participated in the NCAA Tournament last season.
“Starting the season in the Preseason WNIT at Oregon will be an outstanding test for our team,” Flowers said. “This will be a great measuring stick for us.”
The Matadors-Ducks winner will face the winner of the game between Drake and Milwaukee Nov. 12 or 13. If CSUN loses, the Matadors will await an assignment to a Nov. 17-18 bracket for two games on the road. The full WNIT bracket and schedule can be found online at www.womensnit.com.
CSUN sandwiches a game at San Diego State Nov. 14 during the WNIT. The Matadors’ home opener will be Friday, Nov. 24 against Idaho in the opening round of the Warner Center Marriott Thanksgiving Basketball Classic. The Vandals made it to the semifinals of the WBI Tournament a year ago.
The winner of the CSUN-Vandals matchup will take on the winner of the game between Arizona and TCU. The championship game of the Warner Center Marriott Thanksgiving Basketball Classic will be Saturday, Nov. 25 at 7:30 p.m. The third-place game is scheduled for 5 p.m.
“We are happy to provide the San Fernando Valley with an outstanding field for the Warner Center Marriott Thanksgiving Basketball Classic,” Flowers said. “Arizona, Idaho and TCU will join us the two days after Thanksgiving for a great tournament with four quality basketball games.”
The Matadors host back-to-back games against Weber State (Nov. 30) and Fresno State (Dec. 2) before heading back out on the road for matchups against San José State and Loyola Marymount Dec. 7 and 9 respectively. After a break for finals, CSUN opens up four in a row at home against Northern Arizona Dec. 18. Omaha comes to Northridge Dec. 20 before concluding the stretch against Biola (Dec. 28) and Seattle U (Dec. 30). The Redhawks earned a berth into the WNIT last season.
CSUN will play teams from seven different conferences before beginning Big West Conference play Jan. 6 at Cal State Fullerton and home conference action Jan. 11 against UC Santa Barbara. After traveling to Cal Poly Jan. 13, the Matadors return home for games against Cal State Fullerton (Jan. 18) and UC Riverside (Jan. 20).
CSUN hits the road for the next three games: Hawai’i (Jan. 25), UC Irvine (Jan. 27), and UC Santa Barbara (Jan. 30) before coming back home for a UC Davis contest Feb. 3. After hosting the defending Big West Conference Tournament Champion, Long Beach State Feb. 8, CSUN is at UC Davis Feb. 10 and UC Riverside (Feb. 15).
Cal Poly hits The Blacktop @ The Matadome Feb. 17 to begin a three-game home stand for the Matadors. Hawai’i travels to Northridge Feb. 22 before the final home game of the regular season occurs Mar. 1 against UC Irvine.
The 16-game conference schedule ends Mar. 3 at Long Beach State before the Big West Tournament gets underway Mar. 6-7 at Cal State Fullerton. After a one-day break, the tournament semis and finals are set for Mar. 9-10 at the Honda Center.
“Our home games bring some really good opponents to the Matadome, complemented by road games against well coached and respected programs,” Flowers said. “We relish the opportunity to represent CSUN by playing with the work ethic, toughness and togetherness our university embodies.”
The Matadors will be led by 2017 Big West Conference Player of the Year Channon Fluker. Fluker spent this past Summer at the 2017 USA Basketball Women’s U23 National Team Training Camp. The 6-4 center was the only player from a “Mid-Major” school in the camp. CSUN features 10 returning letter winners including all five returning starters. The Matadors will also feature five newcomers on the roster.
