SAN BERNARDINO – Reid Humphreys helped the JetHawks escape a bases-loaded jam in the eighth inning and pitched a perfect ninth to secure a 5-3 win over the Inland Empire 66ers on Friday night at San Manuel Stadium.
Humphreys earned his league-leading 10th save by retiring all four batters he faced, striking out three. The closer entered in the eighth after the 66ers (20-22) had drawn back-to-back bases-loaded walks against Justin Lawrence to get within two runs. He struck out Jordan Zimmerman to end the inning.
The win pushed Lancaster’s season-high win streak to five games and moved them two games ahead of Inland Empire for first place in the South Division.
Vince Fernandez
After homering three times and doubling twice in the Visalia series, outfielder Vince Fernandez picked up where he left off in the series opener Friday. He cracked a double to score Colton Welker in the top of the first inning to put the JetHawks (22-20) on the board. Then, in the third inning, with the game tied 1-1, he tripled home Welker.
Tyler Nevin followed with a sac-fly to bring Fernandez to the plate.
Lancaster added two runs in the seventh inning thanks to three hits and a pair of Inland Empire errors. Manny Melendez scored on an errant throw, and Alan Trejo drove home Forrest Wall with a base-hit to put the JetHawks up, 5-1.
Matt Dennis (3-6) earned the win after allowing one run on five hits over five innings. Starter Nate Bertness (1-4) took the loss for the 66ers.
The three-game series continued Saturday with Logan Lonwith (1-3) scheduled to take the mound for the JetHawks opposite Sean Isaac (0-0).
