Los Angeles County firefighters battled a 10-acre brush fire that broke out in the 20900 block of Via Estrella in Newhall and scorched an apartment building Monday afternoon.

“We’re at 15 acres with zero containment,” LACoFD Dispatcher Art Marrujo said at 6:04 p.m.

At 7:10 p.m., the acreage was revised to 10 acres, with forward progress stopped and the blaze 50 percent contained, according to Supervising Fire Dispatcher Michael Puttman.

The fire threatened the Terrace Apartments off Valle Del Oro Drive in Newhall (pictured).

Puttman said three units in the apartment building had been damaged by fire, and several others by smoke and water.

Puttman added he had reports of three firefighters sustaining minor injuries, but was awaiting confirmation and further details at 7 p.m.

Initially a first-alarm fire, the Railroad Fire was moving uphill and threatening structures and response escalated quickly to second- and third-alarm, as of 4:30 p.m. Monday.

The Railroad Fire was burning between Newhall Avenue and Dockweiler Drive and Sierra Highway and Valle De Oro.

LACoFD air operations were assisting ground units Monday afternoon.

City officials request that residents stay out of the area. Anyone still in the area should evacuate to allow fire crews to battle the blaze.

ROAD CLOSURES

As of 5:15 p.m.: Newhall Avenue is currently closed from Sierra Highway to Railroad Avenue and Dockweiler Drive is closed at Sierra Highway. To re-route, please use Golden Valley Road.

EVACUATION CENTER

Santa Clarita Valley Sheriff’s Station officials are working with the American Red Cross to set up an evacuation center at Golden Valley High School, 27051 Robert C. Lee Parkway, Santa Clarita.
