SAN JOSE — A pair of freshmen combined to send CSUN past San José State 1-0 in men’s soccer action Sunday afternoon.

The Spartans outshot the Matadors in the first half 8-2. Only two of those efforts were on goal where CSUN goalie Henrik Regitnig in his first start of the year made two saves.

The Matadors took the first four shots of the second half. The CSUN pressure resulted in a strong threat in the 56th minute. An Andrew Rizeq attempt went wide right. The ball touched a Spartans’ player on the way out of bounds, resulting in a CSUN corner kick. Wolfgang Prentice put the ball towards the San José State net where Ehi Isibor’s header just went above the cross bar.

The Matadors broke the seal with 17:51 to play. CSUN went on the attack. Prentice, a true freshman, took two dribbles on the right side and sent a cross toward the Spartans’ net. Redshirt freshman Khalid Hunter was able to take a header that went in from the top of the SJSU box. It was Hunter’s second goal of 2018.

With five minutes remaining, the Spartans were awarded two corner kicks. The first San José State corner would go off a CSUN player. On the second, Max Allen’s shot was blocked. At the 87:43 mark, a scramble in front of the Matadors’ goal would end up going off a CSUN player, awarding San José State a corner. The CSUN defense held the line, sending the ball out of the Matadors’ end.

“Every game on the West Coast is tough,” said CSUN head coach Terry Davila. “It is a great team shutout!”

The Spartans (0-1-1) would outshoot the Matadors 10-8 in the match, but CSUN had more shots on goal (4-2). Regitnig recorded his fifth career shutout. He would end the match with two saves. SJSU goalie Alex Clewis who made 11 saves against No. 1 Stanford Friday night in the Spartans 0-0 tie, ended the day with three saves against the Matadors. The match was a physical one as the teams combined for 31 fouls and 10 yellow cards.

CSUN (1-1) hosts New Mexico Friday night in the home opener for the Matadors. Kick is set for 7 p.m.
