The Santa Clarita Valley Sheriff’s Station is urging residents to guard against becoming the victim of fraud following recently reported phone scams involving Google Play gift cards.

Here’s more from the station’s social media:

“Residents have reported receiving scam calls from individuals who claim they skipped jury duty and say a warrant has been issued for their arrest, but the victim can pay a fine now and avoid being arrested.

“And guess what? They can make payment with Google Play cards.

“One victim reported that he received an email from someone who he thought was his boss. It was requested that he do a favor and purchase Google Play Cards because his boss needed to distribute them as gifts. After he purchased them, it was requested that he provide the codes on the back of the cards.

“Long story short, it was a scam. The email address only looked like his boss’s on the surface; there was a hidden address behind it.

“Never use Google Play gift cards to pay for anything outside Google Play.”
