It was a big night for basketball fans as The Signal presented the SCV Hoops Finale, the all-star girls and boys basketball games benefiting the Bridges to Ability Foundation.

Seniors from all eight Santa Clarita Valley high schools made up the all stars on Saturday, with a 3-point shooting contest at halftime of the girls game and a slam-dunk contest at halftime of the boys game.

The games and contests were televised by SCVTV on AT&T U-verse 99, Time Warner Cable 20, and streaming on SCVTV.com. During each game, the coaches for both teams – Chuck Johns and Kent Eaton in the girls game, Chad Phillips and Shant Bicakci in the boys – were miked, with their comments both during the game and during time outs being heard. Interactions with players, referees and even the sportscasters were heard.

In the girl’s game, the team made up of Canyon, Golden Valley and Valencia defeated the players from Hart, Saugus and West Ranch 63-58. Canyon’s Tiffini Stone scored 17 points and was named the game’s MVP.

“This means everything,” Stone told SCVTV after the game. “I’m just so happy that I got the chance to play with all these girls this year and I’m so glad that I played basketball and I don’t regret it for anything at all.”

In the boys game, the team made up of Canyon, Golden Valley, Hart and Santa Clarita Christian defeated the guys from Saugus, Trinity, Valencia and West Ranch 73-70. Foothill League MVP Coley Apsay from Canyon scored 22 points to earn top player honors.

“I really didn’t think I would come in and perform like that,” Apsay said. “But it was a lot of fun, it (the MVP award) means a lot and it means a lot to the school. I just want to thank all the guys out here for working hard and pushing me

Jordan Oster from Saugus won the 3-point shooting contest and Trinity Classical Academy’s James Brooks won the slam-dunk contest.

The boys game marked the final high school basketball game to be coached by outgoing Canyon boys basketball head coach Chad Phillips, who despite being just 35 years old has decided to step aside to spend more time with his family. Phillips is the winningest coach in Canyon boys basketball history having won exactly 200 games over a 12-year stint.

“An all-star game is obviously all about fun and enjoyment and playing with a bunch of guys you’re not used to playing with,” Phillips told SCVTV. “The competitive side wants to win and it was winning time towards the end of that game. But regardless, it was enjoyable to sit on that bench and shake every single one of these boys’ hands.
