The Santa Clarita Shakespeare Festival will present a modern and relevant take on one of Shakespeare’s most famous histories, Julius Caesar, this weekend at the Newhall Family Theatre.
“Julius Caesar” will be presented Friday, Saturday and Sunday, Aug. 2, 3 and 4 at 7 p.m. All performances are free to the public, though donations will be collected at the door.
The dramatic presentation is simply described as Shakespeare meets the Mueller Report. Seven actors will reveal the characters and story that still is important and relevant in its examination of the corruption of political power, chaos after revolution, the ease in which crowds can be swayed, and the nature of conspiracy.
“Shakespeare’s writing is brilliant because he creates characters that continue to strike at the center of what it means to be human,” said Erin McBride Africa, the company’s associate artistic director. “These are themes that continue to reverberate through times and societies.”
Free Shakespeare is one of the oldest cultural events in the Santa Clarita Valley, founded 29 years ago by David Stears, the company’s executive director.
The Free Shakespeare production is part of the nonprofit Summer Theatre Festival, which includes classical plays, family plays, children’s productions and summer drama classes and workshops. The Santa Clarita Shakespeare Festival is the SCV community’s small professional theatre.
SCSF also provides an educational outreach program for local schools, reaching more than 10,000 students each year with free and low-cost programming.
The Newhall Family Theatre is located at 24607 Walnut Street, Newhall 91321.
