Public Safety and Crime Prevention Information for the week of 09/14/15 to 09/20/2015

The following crimes are currently being investigated by Santa Clarita Sheriff’s Station detectives:

A commercial burglary occurred at a business near 23600 block of Newhall Avenue. An unknown suspect broke the glass to the front of the location using an unknown implement and entered the location. The suspect left before stealing any property. After reviewing store footage the owner observed the suspect entered the location after shattering the front window and ran out before stealing any property.

A theft from a locker occurred at a business near Wiley Cyn Rd. Suspect(s) unknown cut the locking mechanism to his gym locker and stole items.

A residential burglary occurred near 25100 block of Market St. Suspect(s) unknown forced entry into the location through a bedroom window and stole items.

A residential burglary occurred near 20900 block of Judah Ln. Suspect(s) unknown made entry into the victim’s residence and stole numerous items. There were no signs of forced entry.

A vehicle burglary occurred near 23700 block of Valle Del Oro. Suspect(s) unknown forced entry into the victim’s work vehicle by shattering the rear window and stole an item from the vehicle.

A vehicle burglary occurred near 23500 block of Lyons Avenue. Suspect(s) unknown forced entry into the victim’s vehicle by shattering the victim’s rear window and stole items.

A petty theft occurred from a business near 24200 block of Main St. Suspect(s) unknown stole the victim’s cell phone from the front counter of the location while the victim stepped away from the front office.

A grand theft occurred near 24200 Arch St. Suspect(s) unknown stole the victim’s locked vehicle from in front of the location.

A grand theft occurred near 24400 block of Valle Del Oro. Suspect(s) unknown stole the victim’s vehicle from in front of the location.

Protecting your business from break-ins

Break-ins can occur anytime your business is closed, and they can happen to large or small businesses alike, no matter where they are located. Keeping your business safe and secure should be always be one of the main things that you, as a business owner, should work towards. Here are 5 tips to protect your business from a break in, each of which should prevent a burglary from occurring before it even starts.

1. Have a monitored security system installed.

Easily one of the best ways to prevent break-ins is to have a security system installed. This can be done at a reasonable price, and the peace of mind you will get knowing that your business is safe and secure will be well worth the small monthly cost. A security system does not have to be extremely elaborate to be effective, oftentimes some motion sensors, a keypad, and a sign are all that would be needed to keep your business safe.

2. Don’t keep small valuable items on the shelf or on the showroom at night.

Even with a security system, there will still be a small window of time between when the police get the alert from the security company, and when they actually get there. If you have valuables such as jewelry, coins, cash, or anything else portable out in the open, thieves may break in anyway with the aim to me in and out in under a minute. Keeping these valuables out of sight of any windows and doors will dissuade potential robbers from breaking in.

3. Use a video surveillance system with a DVR backup.

A surveillance system can be a great way to deter crime since burglars and thieves will know they will be caught on camera. This can also be useful too while you are open in order to record anything going on in your store, and using it as a point of reference if you need to. The DVR backup that comes with some surveillance systems allows you to log into the system from your home or smart phone and see what is going on at that instant. It can also save months’ worth of film in case you need footage of a certain day or even in the future.

4. Make sure possible entry points to your building are well-lit.

Because criminals do not like to be seen, they will try to keep themselves out of anywhere with a lot of light. Having an interior light on, or having lights near your doors and windows can make a burglar think twice about trying to break in if they can easily be seen by people from the road or across the street. Installing these lights to illuminate windows and doors is easy and can even be motion activated.

5. Keep your safe bolted to the floor or embedded in a wall.

A safe for your business that can be picked up or wheeled out on a dolly might provide a tempting target for thieves looking to take your cash or any other valuables you may have stored away in your safe. By using bolts to keep it on the ground, or by having it build into the wall, you effectively remove the chance that a thief would be able to successfully steal your safe before police arrived on the scene.
