On Thursday, March 19, CalArts’ Graphic Design Program hosts the 4th Annual CalArts Print Fair — an Institute-wide, student-organized event that provides artists a space to display and sell their print-based works. This year, the fair hosts more than 60 exhibitors as well as two free workshops in the Main Gallery.

Beginning at 6 pm, students, alumni and faculty from the Art, Film/Video, Music and Critical Studies schools, as well as outside vendors, will sell handmade goods such as posters, zines, totes, T-shirts and more. In addition, issues of CalArts’ semi-annual literary journal, Black Clock, will also be available for purchase.

Event organizers Mina Shoaib (Art BFA 17) and Monique Wilmoth (Art BFA 17) note that the workshops are new to this year’s Print Fair, with two scheduled in the Main Gallery from 7-10 pm.

During these sessions, attendees have the opportunity to create works with practicing graphic designers from the Los Angeles area. Confetti Confidential, a collage practice collective that includes CalArts graphic design alumnae Laura Bernstein (Art MFA 11), Lucy Cook (Art MFA 11), Ania Diakoff (Art MFA 11), Kate Johnston (Art MFA 12) and Julie Moon (Art MFA 11), presents a paper collage workshop. A second workshop, conducted by alums Calvin Rye (Art MFA 14), Cathy Lee (Art MFA 13) and Sarah Shoemake (Art MFA 14), focuses on mechanical drawing More about the mechanical drawing workshop from the Print Fair’s tumblr site:

[Rye, Lee and Shoemake] will be hosting a workshop in which participants will engage with and create crude mark-making machines, drawing (good pun) inspiration from the kinetic Metamechanics of Jean Tinguely and early art-school image-making exercises, such as drawing contours while blindfolded. We will cobble together devices of controlled serendipity, leaning toward the expressive, pathetic and absurd.
