UPDATE at 4:40 p.m.:
No evacuations were necessary after all following a gas line break in Canyon Country, according to Shirley Miller, Santa Clarita Valley Sheriff’s Station spokesperson.
Miller said station deputies were preparing to evacuate about 10 homes on Seville Way after a construction crew broke the gas line, but that the Los Angeles County Fire Department had determined there was no danger and an evacuation was not needed.
“By 4:30 everything was wrapped up,” Miller said.
Here are further details from Melissa Bailey, SoCalGas spokesperson, at 4:50 p.m.:
“Around 2:45 p.m. this afternoon SoCalGas crews responded to reports of a damaged natural gas main near Via Princessa and Seville Way in Santa Clarita.
“It is believed the damage was caused by a third-party contractor working in the area.
“SoCalGas crews stopped the flow of gas around 4:25 p.m. and are currently on scene making permanent repairs.
“No homes were evacuated, however, students in after-school programs at nearby Golden Oak Elementary were dismissed early.
“There has been no interruption of natural gas service.
“No injuries have been reported.”
