The Los Angeles County Department of Public Health (Public Health) presents a day of entertainment, education, and free/low-cost services for pets in celebration of National Pet Health Week. Public Health, along with the Departments of Parks and Recreation, and Animal Care and Control, is hosting the third annual Healthy Pet Expo event on Saturday, May 6 from 9:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. at Whittier Narrows Recreation Area, 750 S. Santa Anita Ave., South El Monte.

This year’s theme “One Health” recognizes the interconnectedness of the health of people, animals, and the environment. The theme encourages responsible pet ownership as part of keeping families healthy through preventive veterinary services, community education, and connecting the public with resources. The event is part of the 2020 Healthy Pets, Healthy Families initiative, which aims to improve both animal and human health.

“The Healthy Pet Expo is a great opportunity to get resources for your pets and have fun with your family and friends,” said Barbara Ferrer, PhD, MPH, MEd, Director of Los Angeles County Department of Public Health. “There is a direct correlation between healthy pets and healthy families since many diseases can be shared between animals and people. It’s important to keep our pets healthy.”

The 2017 Healthy Pet Expo will provide the following services:

Free and low-cost vaccines
Pet adoption
Free ask-the-vet booths
Free contests and giveaways
Free parking for participants
Demonstrations, and much more
Services are on first-come, first-serve basis. All dogs need to be leashed and cats need to be in carriers. Food will be available on-site for purchase.

“Whether you have a pet, or thinking about adopting one, you don’t want to miss this exciting event that will provide invaluable information and services for current and future pet owners,” said John Wicker, Director of the Department of Parks and Recreation. “So, come to the park, and take advantage of this wonderful opportunity that will have a positive and lasting impact on you and your pet.”

“We encourage all pet owners to protect their pets with annual veterinary examinations and vaccinations,” said Marcia Mayeda, Director of the Los Angeles County Department of Animal Care and Control. “Additionally, spaying and neutering, microchipping, proper training, and keeping pets confined on their own property are essential to ensuring their safety.”

To be healthy, your pets need:

Yearly visits to veterinarian
Vaccinations to prevent rabies, parvovirus, and other diseases
Parasite prevention to protect against the spread of fleas, ticks, intestinal parasites and zoonotic diseases (diseases from animals to humans)
Spay/Neuter to decrease the risk for certain cancers, biting, some aggressive behaviors, and roaming
