Update:
The victim in Tuesday afternoon’s fatal collision near the intersection of Highway 126 and Commerce Center Drive has been identified as Dunia G. Abrego, a 46-year-old woman from Canyon Country.
The passenger in Abrego’s 1989 Chevrolet catering truck, Juana Martinez, 41, address unknown, sustained moderate injuries and was transported to Henry Mayo Newhall Memorial Hospital in Valencia.
The driver of the other vehicle, a 2010 Isuzu box van, was Loren Montgomery, 52, of Grants Pass, Ore. He was uninjured.
According to a report from CHP Officer John Lutz (Officer Begley, investigator), at about 1:05 p.m., Montgomery was driving eastbound on Highway 126 at 55 mph. As he approached the entrance to Valencia Travel Village, Abrego exited Travel Village and turned onto eastbound Highway 126, directly into Montgomery’s path.
Montgomery braked “but was unable to avoid colliding with the rear” of Abrego’s truck.
Abrego’s truck overturned and she was ejected. She was not wearing a seatbelt.
“Alcohol and/or drugs do not appear to be a factor at this time,” the CHP report states.
No arrests were made.
Original story:
A fatal collision is being investigated by California Highway Patrol officials Tuesday afternoon.
“We just got (the call), and officers just confirmed that’s what it is,” said Officer John Lutz, CHP spokesman.
The crash was first reported at 1:15 p.m., according to CHP officials.
“It was a one-axle, box truck versus a catering truck,” Lutz said.
“We have a fatality on scene, and we have another party who was transferred to the local hospital with moderate injuries,” Lutz said.
The fatal crash occurred near the intersection of Highway 126 and Commerce Center Drive, according to Sgt. Reyes of the California Highway Patrol’s Newhall Office.
The body was discovered near that intersection.
The nature of the investigation is still being determined by officers, as the call went out shortly after 1 p.m.
“It depends on what’s going on out there, will depend on who’s going to handle it,” Lutz said.
