Santa Clarita City Council members voted to renew a five-year contract with the current company that runs the local libraries for the public library services in the community.
In a 4-1 vote, with Councilmember TimBen Boydston being the lone “nay,” council members voted to approve the $18,719,036 contract with Library Systems & Services, LLC.
“The Santa Clarita Public Library (SCPL) officially opened its doors on July 1, 2011, with great excitement and anticipation,” according to the agenda. “At that time, SCPL consisted of the Canyon Country, Newhall, and Valencia Libraries which encompassed 45,808 square feet.
“The following year, the Old Town Newhall Library replaced the Newhall Library and began operations, thereby expanding the SCPL to nearly 71,000 square feet.”
Three people spoke in protest of the new contract and made suggestions for lower funding and better management.
Lori Rivas, one of the speakers, wheeled in a cart of unused library books and said, “These books represent a small portion money sent down the drain.”
City statistics show the library traffic, materials, circulation, reservations, website visits, program attendance and number of programs have all increased dramatically since taking over in 2011.
