The Santa Clarita City Council will be looking to approve a program that will bring the faces of our actively serving military personnel to city streets during a meeting Tuesday.
If approved, the Hometown Heroes Military Banner Program will showcase those who are actively serving in the military by hanging street light pole banners.
Military personnel and their families will have the opportunity to craft the two-sided, 3-by-6 banners which will show the person’s name, rank, branch of military and color photo, according to the staff report.
The individual or their family will be able to choose one of four locations around the community where the banner can be hung. Options include Soledad Canyon Road in Canyon Country, Lyons Avenue in Newhall, Bouquet Canyon Road in Saugus and Valencia Boulevard in Valencia.
According to the staff report, the banners will be funded by those who request the banner. The city already has an agreement with AAA Flag and Banner, who will be fabricating, installing and removing the banners. The cost for printing and hanging a banner for one year at three separate times will be $417.50 plus tax and the second year would be $232.50, using the same banner, for three hangings.
The city will also fund banners for the Fallen Warrior Memorial Bridge in honor of designated Gold Star Soldiers.
The 11 Gold Star banners will require $4,592.50 to help fund them for the first year, according to the staff report.
The item was first brought to the council by Mayor Bob Kellar on Dec. 8, 2015.

It’s about time!!
They should keep the American flag up here around as well
How bout flags of our Veterans too? I know of a few….. ?? but this is still cool
This should have been done 15 years ago.
I have seen other cities in the Los Angeles area doing this…it is really nice…
How do we submit a photo of our soldier??
Charlie Robinson and Jason Belty they should also do out vets!
I appreciate the service of our active military and veterans. We show our real appreciation for them through great VA care and medical care and post-service hiring practices. That’s the real show of care.
As to the banners – (this will be unpopular) don’t we glorify military service over other extremely important vocations in our society? What of our kids who spend a decade become doctors? Emergency responders? Hazmat response professionals? Engineers? Architects? Skyscraper welders? Counselors? Road constructors?
I fear we risk becoming over militarist by continually focusing on just soldiers. Why this is very important, the United States is much more than our army. And all the vocations that make us possible are in fact, as important as anything else. And this is the point: Equally praiseworthy.
How about posters for our kids, after a life of effort, heading off to Stanford to become scientists? Our kids, after years of work, becoming master welders building our bridges and cities? You get the point.
I’d like to honor all our young people who contribute to making us great. It’s not just the armed forces – and we’re out of balance if we put one over the other.

As much as this sounds like a wonderful idea. It also tells scumbags that you are not home. I had my house broken into while I was deployed once.
So this program, should be voluntary and the service member should have the final approving authority. If I had my choice, I wouldn’t want it done. But, it is a good token of appreciation. Maybe don’t publish the name?

It’s about time! Yes, yes, yes. How do we submit our Heros photo??
It’s a good thought . If someone dies in combat or is totally disabled because of their service yes.
Awesome!!!
What a wonderful thing to do, for those who risk their lives for us!
They do this in Lake Arrowhead. Very nice!
This is a great thing for our city to do!!
This is a fantastic move for our city. At this time in our history civics needs to be reinforced. Posting the faces of our local enlisted man and woman brings a reality check. Reading the names is not as powerful as connecting it with a face, “I know him/her, wow that is what s/he is doing now.” Respect needs to return for our VOLUNTEER Armed Forces. Our pars volunteers and fallen also need our respect. I feel that their names/ faces should go on banners posted on our commercial centers, theaters, malls, (sponsored by them) since that is where we all go on Memorial Day, Veteran’s Day to shop the “sales” to see the newly released films. Simple way to remind all the meaning of the day. I respect the Flag and feel what we currently do is the correct way to honor; Federal and state buildings continue to display, there are some public business that do the same which is great (gas stations) maybe it would be great for the Town Center Mall do the same. If they currently have it, there you go, not visible enough because I do not remember seeing the flag. I enjoy seeing the flag line our boulevards on the special commemorative days; that is indicative of a “special day.” Other wise, with a “daily flag lined boulevard” people get accustomed and will not be reminded of the special day it might be. For example when lowering the flag; people take notice and ask, “Why today?”
