The College of the Canyons swim and dive team competed in the annual Cuesta College Invitational over the weekend, with both the men’s and women’s teams turning in strong performances.
A total of 23 teams from across the state participated in the event held Mar. 11-12.
The COC men’s team finished in ninth place, with the women’s team ranking in 14th.
COC freshman William Karren was the leader for the Cougars with a team-high 46 event points. The Saugus High School product placed fourth in the 50-yard butterfly with a time of 24.80 seconds.
He then followed up that effort with a fifth place finish in the 100-yard butterfly (52.14 seconds) and a sixth place mark in the 50-yard freestyle (22.28 seconds).
Sophomore Naphong Aneksirikul had the highest individual finish of the weekend with his third place time of 30.26 seconds in the 50-yard breaststroke.
Aneksirikul also took eighth place in the 100-yard backstroke (57.77 seconds).
Sophomore Ryan Swindell placed eighth in the 50-yard backstroke event with a time of 29.23 seconds.
On the women’s side, sophomore Jessica Yamauchi had a pair of ninth place finishes in the 200-yard backstroke (2:25.80) and 100-yard IM (1:09.17) to lead Canyons.
Sophomore Breanna Hummitzsch also placed ninth in the 50-yard breaststroke with a time of 36.42 seconds.
Canyons will next compete in Western State Conference (WSC) swim meet No. 2 hosted by Santa Barbara City College on Saturday, March 19.
