user34821-1477357278-media1Sergeant Alfonso Lopez was responding to an assistance request of a stolen vehicle pursuit today, Monday, October 24, 2016, when he collided into a fence at the intersection of Willowbrook Avenue and Myrrh Street in Compton.  With his friends by his side, performing life saving measures to save his life, Sergeant Lopez passed away at St. Francis Medical Center.

Sergeant Lopez began his career with the Sheriff’s Department on January 5, 1990.  During his 26 years of service, he held various assignments that included Court Services, East Los Angeles Station and Special Victim’s Bureau.

In November of last year, he promoted to the rank of sergeant and was currently assigned to Compton Station.

Dear colleague and faithful friend, thank you for your service and friendship.  We will all dearly miss you.

Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department have learned that on Monday, October 24, 2016, at approximately 5:20 AM Compton Station personnel were involved in a pursuit of a stolen vehicle suspect. The Sergeant who was assigned to Compton Sheriff’s Station was responding to assist with the pursuit.

While in pursuit, the Sergeant was involved in a single vehicle traffic collision in the intersection of Myrrh Street and Williowbrook Avenue, city of Compton.

Compton Station personnel responded to the Sergeant’s location when they noticed he was unconscious and non-responsive.  Deputies began cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) prior to Compton Fire Department’s arrival.  When Compton Fire Department arrived the sergeant was still unconscious and non-responsive.

The Sergeant was transported to a local hospital where he passed away.

There is no suspect information, nor any additional information at this time.
