Three of the four victims in Friday’s apparent murder-suicide in Saugus have been identified by the Los Angeles County Coroner’s office, while the identity of the fourth was still being withheld pending notification of next of kin as of 1:30 p.m. Sunday, according to officials.
The three dead were identified as Amy Suzanne Birnkrant, 47; Drew Taylor Birnkrant, 20; and Sean Birnkrant, 11, all of Santa Clarita, said Lt. Rudy Molano of the Department of Medical Examiner.
Molano said the identity of the fourth deceased person, a male adult, would be withheld until next of kin was notified, and that was still pending.
While all four people died of gunshot wounds at the scene, Homicide’s investigation is not complete, and the official cause of death remains undetermined by the Coroner.
“The autopsies are not complete,” Molano said. He anticipated they would be completed this week.
The Birnkrant family members were found dead in their residence in the 28800 block of Startree Lane in Saugus on Friday morning.
A family friend called the Santa Clarita Valley Sheriff’s Station at approximately 7 a.m., and deputies responded to the check-the-welfare call, said Lt. Rodney Moore of the Sheriff’s Homicide Bureau, the lead detective on the case.
Upon arrival, deputies discovered four individuals — one male adult, two female adults and one male juvenile — with gunshot wounds to the upper torso, according to the SCV Sheriff’s Station. All four victims were pronounced dead at the scene.
“We’ve determined that this incident appears to be a murder-suicide, in which the husband shot and killed all three individuals and then turned the gun on himself,” Moore said in a press briefing at the scene Friday afternoon.
“The firearm, which is a handgun, was located here on the scene,” Moore said. “At this time we are not looking for any outstanding suspects. Any individuals who may have information related to this incident are encouraged to contact the Sheriff’s Department Homicide Bureau.”
