Soccer has a way of humbling a team.
No, you don’t have to lose in a landslide to be humbled, but sometimes a team can have the overwhelming majority of chances over a match, and still come out without a goal and without the victory.
College of the Canyons deserved better than the 0-0 scoreless draw against Consumnes River College on Thursday.
Despite outshooting Consumnes River, 21-4 over 90 minutes, the Cougars only managed to test Consumnes goalkeeper Anna Brown with four shots on goal.
The Cougars attacked the Consumnes net throughout the first half, coming up with seven shots. Only one shot – by Canyons midfielder Kelsey Sherry – forced a save from Consumnes goalkeeper Anna Brown.
The second half saw even more action in front of the Consumnes goal. The Cougars managed 14 shots, but again, came up empty.
In the 64th minute, Canyons appeared ready to finally strike, but the Consumnes keeper stopped a shot by COC’s Anabell Gonzalez.
In the final moments, COC managed two more chances via Yevenia Avilez corner kicks, but couldn’t net a goal for their efforts. A Lucy Maino shot went over the crossbar ending a frustrating warm, late-summer afternoon.
The draw drops COC’s record to 2-1-2 on the season. Consumnes River drops to 1-2-3 on the season.
College of the Canyons will next host Santa Barbara City College at 2 p.m., Tuesday Sept. 23.
