The Cougars of College of the Canyons will be playing postseason football. This Saturday the Cougars will play Santa Ana College in the Southern California Bowl. The game will be at 6:00 p.m. and can be heard live on AM 1220 KHTS.
The COC football season seemed lost when after week five COC sat with a 1-4 record. Turnovers, penalties and inexperience seemed to doom the season.
Then a wild double overtime 62-61 win against Antelope Valley, a narrow loss to undefeated Ventura College and a victory before even taking the field against Moorpark College in week 8 when it was announced College of the Desert had used an ineligible player therefore forfeiting the win over COC in week 3.
That news meant that COC’s record then went to 3-4. They would need to win their remaining 3 games to have a shot at a postseason bowl game. Tight End Dan Vear blocked a Moorpark PAT attempt as time expired to seal that win.
The next week at Cerritos College, Vear was at it again catching 2 TD passes from QB Ryan Kasdorf and again blocking a PAT attempt. In its final game of the Cougars outscored Allan Hancock 46-37 as Kasdorf had a huge game throwing for 328 yards and 4 touchdowns. Running backs Andre Davis and Drew Phillips both surpassed 100 yards on the ground as the offense rolled up 596 total yards. They needed to win three in a row and did exactly that, always seeming to come up with big plays when they needed them.
Head Coach Garrett Tujague finishing his 6th season at the helm of one of Southern California’s most successful Junior College programs is extremely proud of how his team fought back after a rough start to find themselves in a bowl game with the chance to earn its first postseason victory since 2008.
Saturday night, COC will be in Santa Ana as the Cougars will take on Santa Ana College in The Southern California Bowl in a game that will be heard live on AM-1220 KHTS. Joe Soriano and Steve Pearson will bring you all of the play-by-play action starting at 5:45 p.m., kickoff is set for 6 p.m.
