Community: Newhall Crime Report for the week of October 17, 2016

The following crimes were reported in Newhall (Zone 6) the week of October 17, 2016:

10/17/16
Burglary – 23300 Maple Steet
Person(s) unknown entered the victim’s unlocked garage and stole numerous power tools, batteries, and battery chargers.  Total loss was $975.00.

Vandalism – 24300 Walnut Street
Person(s) unknown took a jack, a tire iron, and two pieces of stock metal from the open bed of the victim’s truck. Person(s) unknown then used the items to smash the front window of the location. There was no evidence of person(s) entering the business, and no items were taken.

10/18/16
Robbery – 14t^th Street / Railroad Avenue
A male adult attempted to hit the victim, causing him to fall off his bicycle.  The suspect then rode off with the victim’s bicycle (Schwinn, orange/black).

Grand Theft (Auto) – 25800 Avenida Dorena
Person(s) unknown stole the victim’s vehicle (2003 Cherolet Silverado, gold) from the location.

10/19/16
Burglary – 24300 La Glorita Circle
Person(s) unknown entered the victim’s garage and stole her Schwinn mountain bike.  The victim stated her garage was locked.  There were no signs of forced entry.

Burglary – 23600 Newhall Avenue
Person(s) unknown cut the locks to a storage container of the construction site and stole numerous poser drills and extension cords.  Total loss was $4,640.00.

10/21/16
Assault with a Deadly Weapon – 22500 14^th St, Newhall
A male adult attacked the victim, punching him several times and stabbing him in the arm.  The suspect then left the location in a white Ford Expedition (NFD) in an unknown direction.  No arrest was made.

10/22/16
Petty Theft – Newhall Avenue / 14 Freeway
Deputies responded to a call of two male adults seen looking into parked vehicles at the location.  Upon detaining the suspects, one suspect was found to be in possession of a hypodermic needle and stolen property.  The second suspect was found to have stolen credit cards to which he admitted to using to making purchases without the owner’s consent. The two suspects were arrested for theft by access card, possession of drug paraphernalia, petty theft, and possession of stolen property.

How to Prevent Your Car from Being Stolen

Don’t Make It Easy For Car Thieves
Want to make your vehicle less attractive to car thieves?  The quicker a car thief can steal your vehicle, the more attractive it is. Anything you can do to slow down professional car thieves or joy-riders, will make your vehicle a less appealing target.

What You Can Do

Here are some ways to help drivers protect their vehicles:

* Keep your vehicle locked at all times, even while driving.

* When parked, never leave your keys in the car. Close all the windows and the sunroof.

* Never leave your car running and unattended.

* Avoid leaving valuables inside your vehicle where passersby can see them.

* Do not leave your vehicle title in the car. Too often a car thief is pulled over and gets away from the police because he or she can produce the auto registration. (If multiple drivers use the vehicle, the best suggestion would be to hide the registration in a secret location in the car that only the owners know.)

* Know where you’re going. Avoid known high crime areas even if the alternate route takes longer.

* Install an anti-theft system in your vehicle if it doesn’t have one. Thieves are reluctant to steal vehicles if they know the cars can be recovered quickly. Many insurers offer discounts for the types of systems listed below.

* Thieves prefer to work in the dark. Be particularly cautious at night about where you park your car. Park it in a well-lit area if possible.

* Look around. Be aware of your surroundings, especially in garages, parking lots and gas stations.

* Have your car’s vehicle identification number (VIN) etched on each of the windows. Car thieves want to get off cheap. They don’t want to go to the expense of replacing all the glass.

* On an incline, leave your car in park or in gear with the wheels turned toward the curb or some other obstruction. This makes it harder for thieves to tow your vehicle.

* If confronted by a carjacker, do not resist. Cars can be replaced; you can’t.

Types Of Anti-Theft Systems

* A mechanism that locks onto the steering wheel can be a very visible sign that you’ve taken steps to protect your vehicle

* Ignition cut-off systems that prevent a car from being started

* Some new cars come with passive alarms that activate automatically when the key is removed from the ignition

* One system emits a signal that can be tracked by the police
