The Los Angeles County Metropolitan Transportation Authority (Metro) has selected a team led by CH2M to provide the Plans, Specifications & Estimates (PS&E) for the design of new high occupancy vehicle (HOV) lanes along 14 miles of Interstate 5 (I-5). (PRNewsFoto/CH2M)

The California Department of Transportation (Caltrans) will close portions of the Golden State Freeway (I-5) between the Hollywood Freeway (SR-170) and the Kern County line as part of a sign replacement project. The following schedule will be in effect, weather permitting, and subject to change:

Monday, December 12 through Friday, December 16
Northbound I-5
7 p.m. to 5 a.m. – Up to 5 lanes from Paxton Street to Newhall Ranch Road
7 p.m. to 5 a.m. – Lyons Avenue and Magic Mountain Parkway off-ramps

Southbound I-5
8 p.m. to 5 a.m. – Up to 4 lanes from San Fernando Mission Boulevard to Paxton Street
7 p.m. to 5 a.m. – Southbound I-5 connector to Ronald Reagan Freeway (SR-118)
12 a.m. to 4 a.m. – Southbound I-5 connector to San Diego Freeway (I-405)

The night time closures are necessary to minimize traffic delays and provide a safe work zone for construction crews and motorists while working along the I-5. Statewide Traffic Safety and Signs, Inc. is the contractor on this $2.5 million project which began in June 2016 and is expected to be completed by summer of 2017. Improvements will bring existing sign structures to current standards and increase operational safety. Construction signs and changeable message signs will be in place to alert motorists of closures. Motorists should anticipate delays, plan ahead and use alternate routes. Motorists are advised to “Be Work Zone Alert.”

  3. During finals weeks for many of us.. thanks cal trans

  4. Maybe you should fix the road surface itself and not the signage. From the Newhall pass to Castaic is one of the worst stretches of road in los angeles county.

  5. Hopefully they paint visible lane lines, much needed north and south Castaic to magic mountain exits, and entrances, scary at night!!!!
