[KHTS] – Santa Clarita Valley Sheriff’s Station deputies reported five drug-related arrests in a four-hour span Thursday night into Friday morning, as part of a continued effort to keep Santa Clarita’s residents safe, Sheriff’s Station officials said Friday.
“Capt. (Roosevelt) Johnson has attended briefings on all shifts, many times staying past midnight to interact with deputies working patrol overnight,” said Deputy Josh Dubin of the Santa Clarita Valley Sheriff’s Station. “He’s been looking to continue the low crime rate we’ve had in this community, which is based on a close partnership we’ve had with the residents that we serve.”
Two of the arrests were the direct result of Santa Clarita Valley residents who noticed suspicious behavior and reported it to the Santa Clarita Valley Sheriff’s Station, Dubin added.
The Thursday night arrests took place throughout the city of Santa Clarita. The names were not released because the incidents are part of active investigations by Santa Clarita Valley Sheriff’s Station detectives, officials said.
Johnson was named Sheriff’s Station captain in March, and he’s also met with residents to encourage feedback from the community.
Part of his outreach includes Coffee with the Captain, a series of meetings Johnson is holding in each of the crime zones to listen to residents’ concerns and welcome input, Dubin said.
The next Coffee with the Captain will take place Thursday morning at the Old Town Newhall Library.
Canyon Country arrests
Deputies conducted a traffic stop near Nathan Hill Avenue and Charmaine Way in Canyon Country around 9:10 p.m., according to Sheriff’s Station arrest reports.
A 22-year-old woman and a 28-year-old man were pulled over after running a stop sign, the report stated.
As deputies approached the vehicle, they noticed “furtive” movements and when they questioned the driver, they discovered she did not have a driver’s license. A subsequent search yielded methamphetamine in a glass pipe in the driver’s purse; methamphetamine was also found in a straw sealed on both ends, which was hidden in one of the car’s air conditioning vents.
Both the driver and the passenger were arrested for methamphetamine possession.
Newhall arrest
Less than two hours later, a deputy driving east on Walnut spotted a 28-year-old man slumped over in an alley near Spruce, and pulled over to check on the condition of the man.
As deputies entered the alley, the man quickly shoved a white glass pipe into his pocket, which one of the the deputies noticed.
After asking the man in Spanish what he put in his pocket, the man responded, in Spanish, a methamphetamine pipe.
A further search of the suspect yielded a bag of drugs hidden on his person.
Deputies arrested the man near the 24700 block of Walnut Street for possessing methamphetamine.
Valencia arrest
A Santa Clarita resident reported suspicious activity to Santa Clarita Valley Sheriff’s Station deputies late Thursday night on the 25400 block of Via Escovar in Valencia.
An informant reported to deputies a man who appeared to be passed out in a car that had its engine running for more than an hour in a residential area.
The suspect appeared to be asleep when deputies contacted him, according to a Sheriff’s Station report.
The suspect consented to a search of his vehicle, which yielded a package of 14 oxycodone pills on his person.
The man was unable to produce a prescription, so deputies arrested him for possession of a controlled substance.
Canyon Country arrest
Deputies also arrested a 22-year-old man at Todd Longshore Park in Canyon Country on Friday morning, shortly after midnight, according to Sheriff’s Station records.
The deputy was on patrol when he allegedly spotted a man using “paint markers” to vandalize a gate leading to trash storage in the park, according to a Santa Clarita Valley Sheriff’s Station deputy.
A search of the suspect yielded a bag of heroin, and the suspect also was booked for drug possession.

You have no idea just how big the heroin problem is…Valencia…other cities, other states….its truly horrible and I am glad the police are taking action against them. Weed and heroin are two completely different..

A city with affluence and money sitting on a major drug highway, I’m sure using our shining knight deputies and zero tolerance is surely the rightful cure.
So because you are a qualified expert in this arena, what would your plan be to slow down crime? You do know that drugs are the number 1 reason why crime increases in communities right? And surely you know that just about every street crime is directly linked to drugs, correct?
Of course I’m an expert, but to save the face of your sensibilities, I will only claim my opinion to be amateur.
I don’t know your main point, but yes, drugs can be majorly associated with crimes, maybe mostly by virtue that they are unlawful.
Just holding a substance adds another mark to the crime scoreboard; not because you were doing, or going to do, something criminal, but because in of itself it was a crime to hold it.
But that’s a silly point to care about.
A point that isn’t so silly, is the vast amounts of state money that could be saved with an emphasis on rehabilitation & treatment rather than incarceration, where lessons are not quite as well learned when it comes to heavy physical addiction.
The money saved, and the money that could be earned in taxes, might just help a tiny and most extremely necessary bit for this failing state.
No need to mention the complete idiocy of prosecuting lesser drugs, I would hope.
The benefits of taking money and power away from criminal thugs by legalizing is hard to overestimate, there would not be much to fight and kill over. Think of how many lives would be saved. They would have to go back to protection rackets or prostitution, though there are ways to solve those problems too.

and arresting people for making poor choices is the proper use of law enforcement… Said nobody who’s actually aware of why the “war on drugs” has and will never work.
How about information on how we can help stop the selling of spice to our kids in this valley. This is a huge problem in our schools as all the kids know they can smoke that and still pass drug tests at school. Something needs to be done. Parents need to be educated about this! Read up about the side effects! Our valley has a much bigger problem with drugs than anyone thinks! Where were everyone’s kids tonight there is a huge party in acton kids from all over Santa Clarita are going it was put on twitter!

Well articles can say what they want. But I personally have gone through marijuana charges even tho I lost half of my left arm and have my club card. These cops in canyon country help sometimes but will give ridiculous charges when they have nothing to do and are told to go out and make money

And heroin is definitely a huge problem but u guys need to look into where all that heroin comes from. WE get it from Afghanistan and it actually hit record production yesterday. Good effort Sheriffs to get this stuff off the street
That’s what all of the High School and Jr. High School kids say in the Hart District. Either there is heads buried in the sand or no knowlege. it’s time for a major crack down and investigation in our schools to root out the soarce at stop it for good. Valencia High School seem to be the worst for drugs in the district. This just high school kids talking.
The other thing is our Santa Clarita cops are out there busting ass to stop crime and the DA’s office isn’t
