LANCASTER – The Lake Elsinore Storm scored 11 runs in the final two innings to come back and knock off the Lancaster JetHawks, 12-8, on Sunday night at The Hangar.
Fernando Perez hit two home runs, a three-run shot in the eighth inning and a grand slam in the ninth to break an 8-8 tie. The JetHawks held an 8-1 lead after seven innings. The loss snapped a five-game winning streak for Lancaster
Michael Gettys opened the scoring for Lake Elsinore with a one-out solo homer in the top of the first off JetHawks starter Peter Lambert. Following the long ball, Lambert retired the final 11 hitters he faced, striking out five. He finished with 44 pitches in his four innings of work, 31 for strikes.
The JetHawks exploded for seven runs in the bottom of the first (two earned), taking advantage of two Lake Elsinore errors, a balk, and stealing six bases. Lancaster stole 10 bases in 10 attempts in the contest, breaking their previous season-high of seven. Garrett Hampson had two of his three hits in the opening frame. His two-run single brought home the final two runs of the inning.
It remained 7-1 until the fifth, when the JetHawks loaded the bases with nobody out. They were only able to push across a single run on Wilson Soriano’s sacrifice-fly. The JetHawks went 2-for-17 with runners in scoring position on the night, stranding nine runners on base.
Lake Elsinore began its huge come back with five runs in the top of the eighth. Only one was earned. With the JetHawks ahead 8-2, third baseman Mylz Jones dropped a pop up near home plate to allow a run to score. Fernando Perez followed with his three-run homer.
Scott Griggs (0-1) was summoned to try and close out the game for Lancaster, but struggled with his command. He walked River Stevens on four pitches to open the frame, threw a wild pitch to bring home a run, and walked in another. Griggs issued walks to the final three hitters he faced. Logan Cozart was brought in with the bases loaded and two out, as the JetHawks hoped to send the game to the bottom of the ninth at 8-8. Perez tagged Cozart for his second home run in as many innings, a grand slam over the right field wall.
Colby Blueberg (6-2) earned the win in relief for the Storm. Griggs suffered the loss for the JetHawks. Storm starter Adrian De Horta lasted just two-thirds of an inning before being removed. He was charged with seven runs (two earned) and walked two. Lake Elsinore’s bullpen combined to allow just one run over the final eight and two-thirds innings, striking out 11.
Chris Rabago joined Hampson with three hits for the JetHawks. Yonathan Daza’s 11-game hitting streak was snapped, as he went 0-for-5.
Here’s the box score.
