He was the captain of the station not a commander of it. He left the station because he was promoted to a commander.
Well a Station has a commander (or acting commander), which is a position; that person may or may not be a captain, which is a rank.
I met him when he was the captain of the SCV station. When he was promoted from captain to commander is when he left the station.
When he was commander of the SCV Sheriff Station, his rank was captain. Then he was promoted to chief and given a broader command, higher up in the chain of command. http://shq.lasdnews.net/executives/LaBerge-bio.pdf
