Chief Jacques “Anthony” LaBerge of the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department was monitoring his sheriff’s radio while driving on the 14 freeway on his way to work Tuesday morning.
At about 7:30 a.m., LaBerge – who was promoted to departmental captain several years ago after serving as the SCV Station commander – heard a crime broadcast for a robbery that had just occurred.
Dispatchers advised of a woman who had just been robbed of her purse by a male Hispanic in the 19300 block of Golden Valley Road of Canyon Country. The suspect was last seen driving a grey BMW and heading towards the 14 Freeway.
Shortly after he heard the broadcast, LaBerge spotted the robbery suspect’s vehicle on the 14 Freeway, near the Newhall Avenue exit. After coordinating with other Sheriff’s Department units, the suspect was stopped at the Polk Street off-ramp of the 210 freeway.
The extremely heavy commuter traffic made it tough for Santa Clarita Valley Station units to respond to the Chief’s traffic stop. Units from the Sheriff’s County Services Bureau were able to respond quickly from their Olive View Hospital facility in Sylmar, to assist in taking the suspect into custody.
The driver was identified as 20-year-old Aaron Nunez of Sylmar. He was arrested and transported to the Santa Clarita Valley Sheriff’s Station. Chief LaBerge said the successful capture of the robbery suspect was made possible by the multiple units that helped coordinate to bring Nunez into custody. Chief LaBerge stated that it was a “great job by all.”

He was the captain of the station not a commander of it. He left the station because he was promoted to a commander.
Well a Station has a commander (or acting commander), which is a position; that person may or may not be a captain, which is a rank.
I met him when he was the captain of the SCV station. When he was promoted from captain to commander is when he left the station.
