Jessica Greenback

[KHTS] – Officials with the District Attorney’s Office are charging a Canyon Country woman with murder and attempted murder in connection with a shooting that killed one family member and wounded another.

Jessica Paige Greenback, 25, of Santa Clarita, what scheduled to appear in court Tuesday to face five charges related to a shooting in the 18000 block of Danielson Street around 5:30 a.m. Sunday, officials said.

In addition to premeditated murder, she’s charged with false imprisonment, two counts of attempted murder and child abuse.

A source close to the situation reported a small child was in the home at the time of the shooting. The child abuse charge stems from the accusation that Greenback allegedly did not allow her 5-year-old sister to leave the room where the shooting took place, according to prosecutors.

Deputy District Attorney Carmelia Mejia is the assigned prosecutor.

Homicide detectives suspect the shooting resulted from a domestic dispute involving Johnnie Greenback, her brother, listed as Johnnie G., in the complaint, and her father, listed as Sonny G.

Greenback allegedly shot her 28-year-old brother and her father in the home they shared.

A third person, James Gorman, was allegedly shot at by Jessica Greenback, but not injured.

Preliminary reports indicated Greenback was possibly delusional shortly after the shooting, officials said.

Sonny Greenback, the father, who was wounded, said there was no family argument that precipitated the shooting. He expressed his angst at such speculation.

“There was no domestic dispute of any kind that set this off,” Greenback said in a comment he posted to an earlier news story, “and it really bothers me that this has been made up as a motive.”

“It angers me deeply,” he continued, “as I weep the loss of my son as I am recovering a deadly wound. She has a history of mental illness, but this was never thought ever of possibly happening.”

Jessica Greenback did not have any outstanding charges, according to Sheriff’s Department records; however, records indicate she’d been committed for mental health concerns several times in her past.

“Right now, it look likes she has a long battle with mental illness,” Corina said. “She’s had several commitments for 72 hours (over concerns about mental health).”

Greenback’s father is in stable condition, according to a source close to the family.

Officials with the District Attorney’s Office said a case had not yet been filed as of Tuesday afternoon, but officials with the D.A.’s  Office and LASD are discussing charges.

Officials have 48 hours within an initial arrest to charge a suspect, officials said Tuesday.

Greenback’s brother died at a local hospital after sustaining a gunshot wound to the head at the Danielson Street home.

A semi-automatic handgun was recovered at the scene and is believed to be the murder weapon.

Jessica Greenback is being held in lieu of $1 million bail at the Century Regional Detention Center in Lynwood. She faces life in prison if convicted of all charges.
