SAN FRANCISCO, Calif. – Four Bruin greats were named to the Pac-12 All-Century Men’s Swimming & Diving team this week. Comprised of 32 members, the All-Century Team features former UCLA swimmers Tom Jager, Brian Goodell, Mike Burton, and Bill Barrett.
A six-time NCAA Champion, Tom Jager swam for the Bruins from 1983-86. He was an All-American in the 50 Free, 100 Free, 100 Back, 400 Free Relay, 800 Free Relay, and the 400 Medley Relay. Jager was a two-time Pac-10 Champion—in 1984 in the 400 Free Relay and again in 1985 in the 50 Free—and earned Pac-10 Swimmer of the Year honors in 1984.
On top of his standout collegiate career, Jager was also a three-time Olympian who won seven Olympic medals and held the World Record in the 50 Free for more than 10 years. In 1984, Jager won two gold medals (400 Free Relay, 400 Medley Relay) while a sophomore at UCLA. In the 1988 Olympics, he repeated his ’84 performance and added a silver medal in the 50 Free. In his final Olympic outing in 1992, Jager won gold in the 400 Free Relay and bronze in the 50 Free. Jager is a member of the UCLA Athletics Hall of Fame, the International Swimming Hall of Fame, and the Olympic Team of the 20th Century.
The 1977 World Swimmer of the Year, Brian Goodell won nine NCAA titles during his time at UCLA (1978-81), capturing the 500 Free, 1650 Free, and 400 IM championships in 1978, 1979, and 1980. The 11-time Pac-10 Champion was also an All-American in the 500 Free, 1650 Free, 400 IM, 400 Free Relay, 800 Free Relay, and 400 Medley Relay. Goodell earned consecutive Pac-10 Swimmer of the Year accolades in 1978 and 1979.
At 17, Goodell won gold in the 400 and 1,500 Free events at the 1976 Olympics in Montreal, setting world records in both. A two-time Olympian, Goodell was also a Pan Am Games gold medalist in 1979 in the 400 Free, 1500 Free, and 800 Free Relay. A member of the UCLA Athletics Hall of Fame, he held the World Records in the 400 Free (1976-79) and the 1500 Free (1976-80), as well as the American Records in the 500 and 1650 Free, the 400 IM, and the 100 Back. Goodell is also a member of the International Swimming Hall of Fame.
Mike Burton won five NCAA titles in his career, including the 500 Free (1970), 1650 Free (1967, 1968, 1970), and 200 Fly (1970). A four-time Pac-10 Champion, Burton helped lead the Bruins to the Pac-10 Championship Team Title in 1970. Burton was an All-American in the 500 Free, 1650 Free, and 200 Fly in 1967, 1968, and 1970. He also won three Olympic gold medals—two in 1968 (400 Free, 1500 Free) and one in 1972 (1500 Free). While winning gold in 1972, Burton also set a new World Record in the 1500 Free. Burton is a Charter Member of the UCLA Athletics Hall of Fame.
A five-time NCAA Individual Champion, Bill Barrett (1980-82) helped lead UCLA to the 1982 NCAA Championship Title, winning the 200 IM and the 400 Free Relay in American Record times. Barrett was an 11-time Pac-10 Champion and earned three consecutive Pac-10 Swimmer of the Year accolades (1980-82). An All-American in the 200 IM, 100 Breast, 200 Breast, and the 400 Medley, 400 Free, and 800 Free Relays, the former Bruin was an Olympian (1980) and held the World Record in the 200 IM. In 1980, Barrett was Swimming World Magazine’s American Swimmer of the Year.

The Trojans lead the team with 10 selections, followed by Stanford (7), California (5), UCLA (4), Arizona (3.5), Arizona State (2) and Washington (0.5). The All-Century team features 145 NCAA Individual Titles and 28 Olympians.
